Students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade study Spanish for high school credit), and Specials (Art, Music, Physical Education, Technology, and Library
Holy Cross Academy follows the Curriculum Guidelines established by the Diocese of Arlington. These can be accessed at www.arlingtondiocese.org/Catholic-Schools/Curriculum-Guidelines/

Language Arts
Our Language Arts program integrates Reading, Grammar, Spelling, Composition and Handwriting into one program. This allows teachers to coordinate the skills in these programs and to enrich the classes with extended activities.
Reading Component
Reading instruction begins with a phonics-based approach, allowing the children to be successful readers at an early age. Through the 2nd grade, reading skills are emphasized as students gain greater mastery and confidence. In 3rd grade, students continue working on their skills but spend more time using reading as a vehicle to learning in other content areas.
At all levels, students are challenged to read at higher levels through the Accelerated Reader program. Classes read and study novels together, as well as students completing independent reading.
Reading teachers work with our librarian to inspire our students with a love of books and a lifelong habit of reading for pleasure and for knowledge.

Spelling Component
Spelling skills are coordinated with our reading program in the younger grades and with vocabulary instruction in the older grades. Teachers in grades 1 to 3 utilize a Word Study approach to Spelling to assist the students with retention and utilization of the spelling skills learned.
Holy Cross Academy participates in both the local Spelling Bee hosted by the Free Lance-Star and the Diocese of Arlington Spelling Bee. In 2011, Holy Cross 8th grader, Megan Hellmann, placed first in the Diocesan Spelling Bee.

Writing Component

In 2008-2009, our teachers designed a comprehension Writing program to insure that students work on their Writing skills in a progressive manner. Students begin with writing simple sentences in kindergarten and 1st grade and finish with research papers, short novels and plays in the 8th grade. Student in each grade are taught to write clear complete sentences and to extend and correct their own writing. Teachers maintain samples of student writing each year to make their progress more visible.

Mathematics
Our Holy Cross Math program is built upon solid basic skills and leads each student as far as he or she can go. Beginning in kindergarten, students are led to both understand the concepts being taught and master the skills and facts basic to higher learning.

Our teachers utilize Mountain Math as a daily review in the younger grades and all classes have access to IXL Math which we use for review in the summer as well. Problem Solving is an essential component of Math instruction in each grade as it is recognized as an essential 21st Century skill.

Beginning in the 7th grade, students are grouped into Math 7 & Pre-Algebra. Those students who master the Pre-Algebra curriculum move on to Algebra I and Geometry in the 8th grade. The service of an additional teacher at this level allows us to split the 7th and 8th grade classes into 3 groups. This, along with daily tutoring offered in Math during lunch recess and after school, guarantees that each student can learn and succeed in higher Mathematics. Through parish and school volunteers coordinated through our Resource program, National Junior Honor Society tutors and our dedicated teachers, tutoring is available at all grade levels so that all of our students can succeed.

Honors Math
Holy Cross Academy is proud to introduce our newest edition to the mathematics program, Honors Math. Honors Math provides an enriched and accelerated curriculum for our mathematically advanced students in grades 4-6 in a manner that encourages a life-long learning in the area of mathematics. The program is for students who demonstrate superior mathematical understanding, reasoning skills and problem solving abilities. Find out more about Honors Math here.

Religion
The curriculum for Religious Education follows the guidelines of the Diocese of Arlington and is enriched by our teachers and staff who live our faith.
Religion classes are taught Monday through Friday and our students participate in Mass on Wednesdays and participate in the Rosary on Fridays.

Science
Science instruction begins in kindergarten with hands-on projects and experiences.
In the primary grades, students learn most of their scientific concepts by their interaction with the world around them.
In the intermediate grades, grades 3 to 5, students are exposed to more academic concepts through class instruction and experimentation. Use of the interactive whiteboards and the many resources available on-line add to the depth of the experience for the students.
Students in 6th grade follow a detailed study of general science focusing on the scientific method and validated inquiry. These students can also participate in an after-school Science Squad where they study certain topics in-depth to present them to our school community in the Spring.
Our 7th graders have a full year of Life Science and the 8th graders complete a course in Physical Science. 7th & 8th graders participate in the diocesan Science Fair each year where we often have students who place very well in their chosen categories.

Social Studies
Students in kindergarten and 1st grade are exposed to many different types of communities in their Social Studies classes. They learn and celebrate national holidays as they learn about our American history and culture. In the 2nd grade our children explore our neighbors to the north (Canada) and south (Mexico). Interactive studies include learning games, food, customs and reading stories about our North American family. 3rd graders have an in-depth look at government and civics, while our 4th graders focus on the history of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The 5th grade curriculum studies geography and some of the cultures in other continents. In the 6th grade, students travel to ancient cultures and learn about their contributions which still influence the way we live today. 7th & 8th graders begin with the early explorers in America and study our US History right down to today.

In each class, students learn map skills and are led to appreciate the cultures and contributions of peoples throughout the world, knowing that we are all called to be global thinkers and decision makers. The many resources made available through our interactive whiteboards enrich these classes greatly.

Our school participates in the National Geography Bee each year, challenging our students to increase the breadth and depth of their knowledge of our world.

World Language (Spanish)
Spanish instruction begins in kindergarten. Through the 3rd grade, the program is largely an exposure to the language and the culture of the various Latin American countries. 4th & 5th graders follow an academic program which focuses on conversation and everyday vocabulary. Students at this level begin studying verbs and sentence construction. In the 6th grade students begin a program which will allow them to complete and exceed the requirements of Spanish 1 by the end of 8th grade. Students read, speak and write in Spanish. At all levels, students are exposed to the cultures of Spain and various countries in Latin America.
